Lesson Plan
"Trek Across the Milky Way"
6th Grade/Science
Standard: S6E1. Students will explore current scientific views of the universe and how those views evolved.
Essential Questions:
Lesson Objectives:
-Students will be able to list and describe each planet and their unique characteristics by completing multiple review games using chart diagrams and then breaking up into groups to create their own chart diagram
-Students will choose one planet to complete a research paper and model to present to the class.
Performance Objective:
-Students will chart a solar system diagram with 80% accuracy by the end of the lesson.
-Students will be able to list and describe the planets in our solar system by accurately completing an essay and model presentation on a planet.

-Science composition books (for student use to take notes while presenting PowerPoint)
-Students will need paper, posters, crayons, markers, old magazines, scissors, and glue to complete their group chart diagram.
Procedures:
Whole Group:
-Students will take notes in their science composition books as teacher goes over Solar System PowerPoint Presentation with the class.
-Teacher will present to the class the VoiceThread Mnemonic Device lesson for students.
-Students will participate as a class in an interactive Smart Exchange review game to review their knowledge of the order of the planets.
-Teacher will present Planets Around a Star song to class.
Small Group:
-Students will divide into groups of 4 and complete a chart diagram of our solar system and the planets in it using various materials.
Individual:
-Students will complete a paper and model of one planet of their choice and present it to the class at the end of the unit.
Differentiation of Instruction:
-Use of technology such as the internet, interactive Smart Board review lesson, and PowerPoint Presentation
-Use of music and videos to explain content
-Computer Review Game for student use
-Breaking into groups to create a chart diagram of our solar system
-Planet model project--students given the freedom and choice to choose any planet and create a model using whatever material they want

Assessment:
-Informal assessment on the students participation in interactive review games.
-Students will be assessed individually on their essay and model project.
Directions for the Assessment:
(found under Planet Project tab)
Differentiation of Assessment:
Students are given the freedom of choice on which planet to present on and what materials they use for their model presentation. A formal written paper and a model of the planet differentiates the content. Students must also formally present their model to the class.
